Around 1890 Nakayama moved to Tokyo, where became a member of Negishi Shingoro's Yûshinkan Dojo. There he studied Shindô Munen Ryû kenjutsu and kendô becoming the 7th headmaster of that ryûha.

| Nakayma Hakudô was well known also in the Kendo world: he is said to be the only person to have received both jûdan (10 dan) and hanshi ranks in kendô, iaidô and jôdô from the All Japan Kendô Federation.

| Nakayama-sensei studied both the Shimomura-ha of Tosa Iai under Hosokawa Yoshimasa and the Tanimura-ha under Morimoto Tokumi, and received a menkyo kaiden in Ômori Ryû and Hasegawa Eishin Ryû. Based on his extensive studies he formed his own style known today as Musô Shinden Ryû.
